The Science on Double-Dipping

Posted on February 3rd, 2008 by blue collar scientist

The Great Beyond is reporting on a paper that will appear in an upcoming Journal of Food Safety about double-dipping - which is apparently the practice of dipping your chip or vegetable twice, the second time after having taken a bite out of it. It turns out this practice does indeed contaminate the dip and potentially pose a danger to the next person to consume it.

Of course, whether it actually poses a danger or not depends on a bunch of variables, such as the type of the chip and the kind of the dip and whether or not the double-dipper is sick, and so on.

Still, it inspires a seemingly useful rule of thumb, and that would be: Be wary of dip at parties, and only double-dip with people that you would (in theory, and if all the gender/preference issues were suitable) willing to kiss.

I’m led to understand the whole “double-dipping” meme had something to do with a sitcom on US television in the 90’s called Seinfeld, but I’m not sure I’ve actually seen a complete episode of it.
